Learning at The HART Center

At the HART Center, learning is built around real work, real responsibility, and real growth. Rather than relying only on traditional school subjects and grades, we guide students through a framework that develops thinking, skill, independence, and character.

Our learning model combines:

  • reading and writer’s workshop

  • project-based learning

  • hands-on skill development

  • outdoor and survival education

  • entrepreneurship and practical life skills

  • badge-based progress and mastery

Growth Rings

Students grow through our Growth Ring system, which reflects increasing levels of maturity, responsibility, and capability.

Seed Keepers → Sprouts → Saplings→ Redwoods→ Aspens

These stages help us recognize growth not only in academics, but also in leadership, independence, follow-through, and contribution to the community.

Badges

Students build skills through a badge-based learning system. Badges allow learners to work toward meaningful competencies across a wide range of areas, including wilderness skills, entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, technology, practical life skills, and more.

Each badge includes clear requirements and gives students the opportunity to demonstrate learning through projects, written work, presentations, and hands-on application.

Curriculum & Learning Experience

Our curriculum is designed to balance core academic foundations with real-world learning.

Students engage in:

  • deep reading and discussion

  • writing and communication

  • applied problem solving

  • outdoor education and survival skills

  • projects, building, and craftsmanship

  • community, leadership, and practical responsibility

This approach helps students connect what they are learning to how they actually live.

Grading & Assessment

The HART Center uses a 4-point mastery rubric rather than traditional letter grades alone.

Students are assessed in three key areas:

Quality
Depth of understanding, craftsmanship, and thoughtfulness in the work.

Execution
Completion of the work and ability to demonstrate the required skill or concept.

Independence
Initiative, responsibility, and the ability to begin and sustain work with increasing ownership.

This gives families a clearer picture of growth than a single grade can provide.

What Families Can Expect

First, and most importantly, families can expect that their child is safe to be themselves, honored and supported on their individual path, cared for, challenged, and held accountable with compassion.

Our goal is to help young people become capable, thoughtful, self-directed, and grounded in their environment wherever life may lead them.

  • “A society grows great when elders plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” — Greek Proverb
